Just July? No, I think not.
July 5, 2019

The days are actually starting to get shorter. Yet, the sun is blazing hotter. Summer is slipping through my fingers like sugar-fine sand. Hope your days are going great. For more of my summertime fun, check out my Instagram page or author page on Facebook.

If you’re a newsletter subscriber, you’ll know this is the post where you drop your comment to be entered to win a $20 restaurant gift card. In all the Jubilee, Georgia books, there are recipes. There are characters who own restaurants and many who meet up there…for the sunsets on Fancy Bluff Creek, maybe a glass of wine, and to check out some of the tourist they don’t know. Could you be one of them?

Remember, you must include the Where, What, and When in your post.

Can’t wait to read your comments! And who knows, you might find elements of your special meal in a book in the future.

What's better than a book and a meal to celebrate summer?

It would be steaks and corn grilled and eaten on the balcony on any “big” summer occasion like Father’s Day and the 4th of July. Steak used to be a big splurge, but the last year or so steaks (t-bone or porterhouse) have been on sale for only a dollar or two more a pound than “cheap” cuts. I’d rather spend $5 on a porterhouse than $4 for round steak.

My favorite meal is fried shrimp. From a new restaurant that just opened called the wrap shack. Its nice and peaceful to sit outside. Especially when its not raining.

    • Linda Joyce

      Lisa,

That sounds really nice. I know how much your Aunt Ruby loved fried shrimp, too.

My favorite summer dinner is at my home every year when we celebrate my daughters birthday (weekend of June 22), who I lost at 23 years old. It’s our way for all her friends to come over and we celebrate her life. We have Omaha steak hotdogs and hamburgers. Everyone brings a side dish. It’s a lot of great food. We end up laughing at “Krista” stories and cry for our huge loss of this wonderful woman.

    • Linda Joyce

      Lori,
That sounds like a wonderful tribute to your daughter. I’m sure she’s there in spirit when all of you are gathered.

My favorite summer meal? I have so many it’s hard to narrow it down. However my all time favorite summer meals have to be when my family is all together and we BBQ, usually hot dogs or hamburgers, (sometimes)corn on the cob, potato and macaroni salad (especially when it’s homemade). On the 4th my mom BBQ-ed tri tip marinated in rosemary and other spices (I can’t remember exactly everything), corn on the cob wrapped in bacon with salt, pepper, paprika, onion & garlic peppers, and mom’s homemade potato salad. My 13 yr old almost ate the whole bowl of tater salad as I called it.

    • Linda Joyce

      Tamara,
What fun! And that corn on the cob wrapped in bacon–I’m going to try that!

My favorite meal was at Stonewood’s in Ormond Beach, FL. I just love their pretzel bread appetizers, blackened chicken pasta with vegetables and creme brulee. I like to go either with my 88-year-old father on special occasions such as birthdays or our anniversary of when we moved to FL from NJ to start a new life. Also, I go there with my best friend to celebrate birthdays and milestones! I don’t get to go out too much with work and going back to college, but when I do, I like to go to Stonewood’s. Maybe I can celebrate school graduation at Stonewood’s–fingers crossed!!

    • Linda Joyce

      Terri,

It’s wonderful to have a special place to celebrate.
Where did you live in NJ? We moved from NJ to St. Pete, Florida years ago. I went to high school and college in Florida. Where are you going to school? What are you studying?

      Happy Summer,

I lived in Keasbey, NJ, part of Woodbridge Township about 2 miles from the Staten Island Bridge! My father and I moved down here in 2000 after my mother’s passing from ovarian cancer. I’m going to Daytona State College to study Medical Coding and Billing as part of my job! Terri

For our anniversary, my hubby and I travel to ellijay Georgia to eat at Shanes rib shack. Nothing fancy, but it’s a good hour and half from home. We devour the bbq sandwiches and crinkle fries. We’re simple people lol.

Ooh for holiday BBQs nothing comes close to my mom’s potato salad… Always so yummy! As for fav restaurant, that depends on my mood… We went to Olive Garden for a b-day… Loved their chicken and gnocchi soup & the chicken parmesan! Other times, I love a good steak! Happy Summer!

    • Linda Joyce

      Colleen,

Is there a secret ingredient you mom uses for her potato salad? I love a great steak on the grill. Sadly, I could never be a vegetarian.

      Happy Summer!

Love the picture. For my family and I we love a little Chinese food place called Silver Moon. It’s small and has been in our town for over 20 years. They have watched my son grow up. Other than that my all-time favorite is homemade tacos. My life mate Paul (we have been together for 17 years and counting ) makes these amazing tacos. The meat is made with cumin, corrandiar, soy sauce, sugar, garlic, and wine. On corn tortilla’s with cheese, white onion, cilantro and sometimes Frank’s redhot sause. It’s the best. 16 months ago my son burnt my kitchen and the contactorsummer turned it into my ENTIRE house being gutted and redone. So we hadecided to stay in hotel’s or in a small travel trailer with noway to cook. So we ate out everyday. I hate fast food now. We moved back into our house two weeks ago and the 1st night I had Paul make tacos lol

    • Linda Joyce

      Barbara,
A fire. Wow! That can be quite devastating. Unfortunately, my husband suffered two family homes burning completely when he was growing up. You couldn’t cook in the travel trailer? I sure understand you lack of desire for fast food. And YAY Paul! for making such great food.

      Happy Summer,

We just moved to Memphis and found the Cafe Eclectic and they have a Sunday bruch complete with Fried Green Tomotoes Benedict. So yummy!! Such a fun summer treat!!

    • Linda Joyce

      Angel,
Where did you move from? I lived in Kansas City for a dozen years…and for my taste, it’s better than much of Memphis BBQ. I have a couple of friends in Memphis, when I visit, I’ll have to try your place. Sounds YUMMMY!

My favorite summer dinner would have to be a simple cold chicken and salad. I do like to add mango to the salad though.

    • Linda Joyce

      Mary,

My husband loves mango. I’ll have to mention this to him. I like chicken salad with grapes and toasted almonds.

      Smiles,
      Linda Joyce

My favorite summer meal is not really a meal but I can eat enough of it to say it’s a meal! Haha! Grilled corn! We take it shucks and all and put it on the grill. Once it’s done, the shucks and silks come right off. It’s amazing. We have it every time we go to the lake or our backyard BBQ’s. So basically all summer!

    • Linda Joyce

      Dusty,

I love grilled corn, too! Once it’s shucked, I take a mixture of honey and soy sauce and paint it on, then put it back on the grill just for a moment. I think it needs to be a street food. People should sell it grilled at farmer’s markets. Yum!

      Smiles,
      Linda

One of my favorite meals out I can recall was Dinner at the Fore Street Restaurant in Portland Maine twenty years ago this week. My husband chose a Surf and turf platter of Steak & Shrimp, I decided to try their Special of the day- Rabbit pie, served with creamy mashed potatoes . Though I was very full, I couldn’t resist trying the Creme Brule’ for dessert.

    • Linda Joyce

      Cindy,

I loved our trip to Maine. I’ve been trying to get back there for years. We had lobster at nearly every meal. And of course, Maine Lobster Direct, where I order my lobsters, is on Portland, ME. I hear the city has quite the food scene now. Maybe I can get back there soon.

I was in New Orleans for a family reunion back in 1990 and my family from there had big kettles of Jambalaya stirring. I picked out all the fishy stuff and mainly ate at Popeyes chicken.

    • Linda Joyce

      Lori,

You don’t like fish? If you get back to New Orleans (and might be there next May for a big book event…still working on that) try Willie Mae’s — http://www.williemaesnola.com/
My favorite place for fried chicken, red beans and rice, and fried chicken livers closed… So Willie Mae’s is my go-to place now.

      Happy Summer,

The photo on your newsletter is making me terribly hungry and they are my favorite foods. I haven’t had Lobster since we went to Maine to visit my mother in law. She went out and bought lobster and made them for dinner. One lobster just isn’t enough. lol She passed several years ago and my husband passed in 2oo9. I hope the lucky winner of this contest enjoys their dinner. I wish it could be me but I would be going alone if that were to happen because my grandson eats nothing good. So choose that lucky winner wisely. I just wanted to post to tell you how much I love that photo. Reminds me of New Orleans.

    • Linda Joyce

      Sharon,

Are there any book groups or other interest groups near you for you to join? Have you ever looked at groups on Meet UP? You might find a group in your locale that gathers for fun events and dinners. Here’s the link: https://www.meetup.com/ Put in the city nearest you and discover other women who like the foods, books, entertainment that you do. 🙂

      Hugs,

I went wandering one Sunday in June with a friend and we ended up in Safety Harbor, Florida. So.lucky as it was quiet (probably because of the rain expected). We wandered in all the little touristy gift shops and found this great restaurant–Southern Fresh–and of course I had FRIED CHICKEN like grandma used to make–I forget what Amy had but she cleaned her plate–maybe we can meet there next time you are in town.

    • Linda Joyce

      Susan,
      I would love that!

      Smiles,
      Linda

My favorite meal is Steak & Lobster although it’s very rare that I go out to eat these days. A long time ago Mythen husband and I went to San Diego when we bought our house and treated ourselves to the Steak and Lobster dinner at the restaurant by the bay. Darn don’t you hate it when you forget the name of the restaurant. We had salad and baked potatoes and we were in a window seat so we could see people water skiing and in their boats. That was a really good day. I don’t think I was able to eat everything, I was so full. We are now divorced after being married for 24 years. Not everybody finds their Soul mate in life and that’s just the way it goes, although never say never. .

        • Linda Joyce

          Jane,

Steak and lobster. Now, I’m really hungry. There’s a place called the Fish Market at the harbor in San Diego. There, I ate THE best sushi I’ve had outside of Japan. (and I’ve eaten sushi all over the USA.)
As for the ex-husband…I think we can be gifted with more than one in a lifetime. We grow and change…and I’m a romantic–always believe in love.

          Smiles,
          Linda Joyce
